Search and Destroy Manga Award: ALA Honors the Series
The Search and Destroy Manga Award recognition has officially placed Atsushi Kaneko’s work in the international spotlight. Specifically, the American Library Association (ALA) recently announced its 2025 Outstanding Comics Awards for Adults. The Graphic Novels & Comics Round Table granted Honors in the “Series” category to the complete three-volume release. Published by Fantagraphics and Mangasplaining Extra, the series successfully captured the attention of critics and librarians alike. Moreover, this recognition highlights the manga’s unique contribution to the medium.

A Modern Reimagining of a Classic
The manga began its digital serialization through the Mangasplaining Extra newsletter in August 2023. Initially, print editions followed in July 2024 to bring the story to a wider physical audience. All three volumes received the award recognition, treating the series as a single, complete masterpiece. Consequently, the Search and Destroy Manga Award serves as a testament to the consistency of Kaneko’s storytelling. Reimagined from Osamu Tezuka’s classic Dororo, the narrative shifts the original tale into a brutal dystopian future.
Cybernetic Revenge in a Dystopian City
The story follows a city ruled by powerful elites and enforced by mercenary robots known as “creatures.” After the violent death of an enforcer, an orphaned thief named Doro becomes entangled with a mysterious girl. This cybernetically enhanced protagonist fuels a relentless campaign of revenge against those who wronged her. In addition, the manga stands out for its raw emotion and striking visual style. Therefore, the series offers a fresh perspective on the themes of humanity and cybernetics. Notably, Kaneko’s art style remains one of the most distinct in the modern industry.
